  • SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

    SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

Lansdowne School exists to facilitate Kindergarten to Grade 6 education focused on developing students into well-rounded learners. We take an open approach to learning that encourages students to be curious, engaged, motivated, and secure with themselves.

We believe in inclusive learning that supports students’ unique backgrounds and experiences. We facilitate community building within and outside of our school, and our students understand the importance of their role as community members.

We foster a welcoming environment that provides learning opportunities focused on developing well-rounded children with a global perspective. Students leave Lansdowne School with a better understanding of who they are and the confidence to pursue their interests as they move through their educational journey.

    School Values

Learning — we embrace rich learning environments. Knowledge is gained through different experiences that don’t just come from books and computers. We believe learning should encompass the academic, social, creative, and physical and mental wellbeing of a student’s development.

Community — whether it’s within the walls of our school, or outside of them, fostering a culture of belonging and inclusivity is second nature at Lansdowne School.

Inclusivity — we recognize and embrace the uniqueness of each student at Lansdowne School. Diversity of background, thought, and experience makes our school a richer place to learn.

Responsibility — we are respectful, welcoming, and kind. We hold ourselves accountable and acknowledge we have a duty to be good global citizens.

Safety — Lansdowne School is a safe space. Students, teachers, staff, parents and visitors feel welcome and secure. Each member of our community feels safe to express themselves and grow and learn to achieve their best.

Welcome

ABOUT LANSDOWNE SCHOOL:

Welcome to Lansdowne School in the heart of Edmonton's southwest community of Lansdowne.

For the 2024-2025 School year, we are excited to offer the Cogito Alternative Program in Kindergarten through Grade 3, alongside our high quality, Regular programming for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

At Lansdowne School, our small size is our strength.  Built in 1968, Lansdowne School has a rich history as a diverse community of students, teachers, staff, and parents. Lansdowne School has had as many as 41 languages spoken among its population, exposing students to the vibrant multicultural fabric that makes up Edmonton, Alberta, and Canada.

Over the years, Lansdowne School has maintained a modest-sized student body drawing from communities around Edmonton, that’s continued to develop the school’s “small town” feel. A safe place where everyone watches out for each other, Lansdowne School is a friendly, caring tight-knit community where learning is fun and friendships are long-lasting.

With thriving learners, exceptional teachers, and a welcoming student body, Lansdowne School is a secure place for children to learn. With a focus on inclusivity, diversity, creativity, and knowledge sharing, Lansdowne School believes in education that supports the development of children into well-rounded global citizens. Our students are conscientious, enthusiastic learners excited to develop their critical thinking and analytical skills as they grow and advance along their educational journey.

We have a dedicated parent and community of volunteers who support our students' learning and celebrate the involvement of a strong School Council and Parent Advisory Council (Parent Association of Lansdowne Students - PALS).  We are proud to share school space with the Lansdowne Child Care Family Centre and Lansdowne Out of School Care.

KINDERGARTEN COGITO 'MEETINGS FOR SUCCESS':
If you have completed the digital registration for the Cogito program, you will need to bring your child to school for a "meeting for success."

The meetings for success will provide us with information to discuss your child's readiness for the expectations and demands of the program.   These meetings will be held Thursday, March 7th, 2024 and Thursday, March 21st. 2024 at 2:45 p.m.   Confirmation of date and time will be sent in March.

Parents and children would arrive at 2:35 p.m.  School Administration will use the evidence and observations collected during the ‘Meeting for Success’ to engage parents in a conversation about the child’s readiness for the expectations and demands of the program. These meetings are an important way to connect with our new families and students, and this connection is vital to student success in the Cogito program.

GRADES 1 - 3 NEW REGISTRATIONS:   New registrants interested in the Cogito Program can be asked to provide a copy of their latest Progress Report. School Administration can use this to engage parents in a conversation about the child’s readiness for the expectations and demands of the program. Levels of achievement are not used as the sole determining factor for the child’s readiness for the program.

Principal's Message

Whether you are new to our community or returning, hello and welcome to Lansdowne School!  We are particularly excited to welcome our new families to the school for our 2023-2024 academic year as we invite change and growth to our school, with the addition of Grade 2 Cogito Alternative Program.

At its very core, Lansdowne School is a community. We are a place for students from all different backgrounds to come and learn, explore, and forge lifelong friendships. Within the walls of our school, you’ll find a “small town” where everyone knows your name. With a population of approximately 165, our students aren’t one in a sea of many—they’re one exceptional person, recognized as the individual they are.

Within our school community, we nurture diverse learning opportunities to create well-rounded students who are socially and environmentally conscious. We meaningfully incorporate global perspectives into learning and encourage students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers who respectfully embrace a diversity of opinions.  Learning at Lansdowne School encourages goal setting (both personal and academic) and the development of core competencies in literacy and numeracy regardless of which one of our programs students participate in.  Students feel free to express themselves and explore new ideas, channel their unique creativity, and discover more about themselves as members of a global community.

Learning at Lansdowne School means being part of an inclusive place that embraces you exactly as you are. We value the ongoing support of our parents and community members. We believe that students, parents, and staff working together create our strongest educational team. Students leave our school with a better understanding of who they are and the confidence to pursue their interests as they move through their educational journey.

Our resilient, exuberant students continue to impress us with their positivity, creativity and appetite for learning.  We are eternally grateful to our incredible group of teachers and dedicated parent community who have continued to encourage and champion the students.

It is with excitement and optimism that we embark on the 2024-2025 school year and invite you to join us for the unique learning journey at Lansdowne School.

Yours in partnership,

Janice Anderson

FULL IN PLANNED CLASSES

For the 2024 - 2025 school year, Lansdowne School is full in planned classes from Kindergarten to Grade 6 in the regular program AND Kindergarten to Grade 3 in the Cogito program. We will no longer be accepting students in the Cogito program. For the regular program, a Kindergarten student who is a resident and lives in the school's attendance area may still register. For Grades 1 to 6 in the regular program, we will only accept resident students whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have newly moved into the school’s attendance area. A resident student of Edmonton Public Schools has at least one parent or legal guardian living in Edmonton who is not Roman Catholic. Non-resident students can enrol in another Division school with space in planned classes.

If you are registering for Kindergarten or are new to Edmonton Public Schools, you must register online.
