A long time ago, when Lansdowne School first opened its doors, people say a bright Blue Jay began showing up each morning just as the sun peeked over the rooftops. Students playing in the schoolyard would spot it perched high in the trees, calling out as if it was cheering them on — “Be brave! Be kind! Stay curious!”
Blue Jays had always fluttered through the neighbourhood and the nearby river valley, but this one felt special. With its bold colours, clever mind, and confident voice, the bird quickly became a favourite among the students. Some even say it listened in on classes through open windows and joined in on recess fun.
Before long, everyone agreed: the Blue Jay truly belonged at Lansdowne. So the legend goes, the Blue Jay became the school’s proud mascot—a symbol of courage, community, and an eagerness to learn.
To this day, people say if you listen closely in the morning breeze, you might hear a cheerful “jay, jay!” echo through the trees, reminding all of us to be welcoming, thoughtful, and ready for whatever adventure the day brings.
